SOCKS

This film has won 23 awards, national and international. "SOCKS" is a cinematic gut punch, a raw and unapologetic exploration of one woman’s journey through the depths of sex trafficking into the light of resilience. Directed by Ashley Aquilla and brought to life by the powerful performance of Laprise Johnson as Belinda, this short film is storytelling in its purest form. Penned & produced by Mary E. Weems, ‘Sock’s proves that a limited budget is no match for the sheer force of storytelling skill. Laprise Johnson’s portrayal of Belinda is a revelation, a captivating performance that peels back the layers of trauma with unflinching honesty. Within the confines of a humble apartment, Belinda’s monologue echoes with the weight of her past, a past marked by unspeakable horrors inflicted by sex traffickers who sought to strip her of her dignity. Lonnie EL’s cinematography is a silent witness to Belinda’s journey, capturing the shadows that lurk in every corner and the flickers of hope that refuse to be extinguished. Belinda’s story, we are confronted with the stark reality of sex trafficking, forced to confront the uncomfortable truths that society too often chooses to ignore. But amidst the darkness, ‘Socks’ offers a beacon of light in Belinda’s unwavering resilience. Through the support of her mother and the camaraderie of fellow survivors, Belinda finds the strength to reclaim her voice and demand justice for herself and others like her. In a world rife with the insidious grip of sex trafficking, ‘Socks’ is a sledgehammer blow to complacency. Belinda’s story is not merely a tale of survival; it’s a battle cry for justice, a defiant proclamation that the voices of the oppressed will not be silenced.

ABOUT COBRA AND CONDUCTOR'S CINEMATOGRAPHER, SANO

SANO Sanoizm Theiveland Moorish American Education.jpg

Sano has the most naturally talented eye for cinematography that I’ve ever worked with.  His martial arts training enables him to move cameras steady free-hand and in awkward positions for extended periods.  Sano is a mural artist and graphic designer who learned on the mean streets of Cleveland and now lives, works in, and enjoys sunny Los Angeles with his happy family.  I met Sano through Kongfu.  He was a pupil of my pupil.  He asked me to teach him and had a good reason why.  I liked him and taught him.  I came to enjoy the company of Sano for several reasons, but none more important than this, when Sano was around, I didn't have to fight as much to prove the effectiveness of my Kongfu.  At about 150lbs body-weight, Sano became so skilled that he'I could syc him on any man of any size and Sano would effectively demonstrate Finish Him.  Sano owns the brand and clothing-line, Thieveland, the popular urban hook of Cleveland, and operates through (and Click it):

CHESS

Chess is fun and also a great starting point and tool for Moorish American Eduction, life lessons, and mentoring.

Through chess we learn that fundamentals are foundational and that with a strong foundation, we can build anything, including our minds, bodies, and social lives.  Chess is a game of war and teaches that s/he who plans and strategizes develops a vision, one step at a time, that a plan’s strength and success involves several cooperating elements, not loners, and that goals are accomplished not all at once, but a little at a time.
